The deceased or slain spirits and mortals on both sides are canonized as deities in the Taoist pantheon under a celestial hierarchy. It is one of those strange, unmotivated and therefore rather convincing tales that are scattered through the early chronicles. Tall tales play along the boundary between what is real and what is not. I often used to read this story aloud to older children in primary schools; they were always totally gripped and enthralled by the non-stop action and rich array of enchantment.
