By looking at the definitions and relationship of terms (e.g. between transgender and transsexual, cross-dresser and drag queen), the history of transsexual/transgender studies – and the processes through which transgender people were central to the development of transsexuality narratives and more recent transgender studies – I illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of this field.
